CANZAC Low Friction Bearing Strip is designed to accommodate movement between precast concrete floor units and their supporting structure.
Installed between the precast flooring and a supporting concrete wall, beam or corbel, the strip provides a smooth upper surface that allows the floor unit to slide or rotate slightly as temperature changes, concrete shrinkage and building movement occur.
The ribbed underside grips the supporting surface and helps prevent the bearing strip from gradually working out under repeated cyclic movement.
Manufactured from impact-resistant, 100% recyclable plastic, CANZAC Low Friction Bearing Strip is supplied in 2.4 m lengths and is available in 50 mm and 75 mm widths for a range of precast concrete floor systems.
Precast floor units undergo movement caused by concrete shrinkage, thermal changes, imposed loading and movement within the supporting structure.
Where the precast unit bears directly onto concrete, surface friction can restrict this movement and transfer unintended forces into the flooring unit or supporting structure.
CANZAC Low Friction Bearing Strip creates a controlled sliding interface at the bearing location. Its smooth upper face allows the precast floor unit to move over the strip, while the ribbed underside grips the support beneath it.
This allows the required relative movement to occur without the bearing strip progressively moving out from beneath the precast unit.
Installation
- Confirm the specified bearing-strip width and required bearing length.
- Ensure the supporting wall, beam or corbel is clean and free from loose material.
- Check that the bearing surface is sufficiently level and suitable for the specified detail.
- Cut the strip cleanly to the required length.
- Position the ribbed face against the supporting surface.
- Position the smooth face upward beneath the precast concrete unit.
- Install the precast flooring without displacing or damaging the strip.
- Confirm the required bearing length and final floor-unit position before completing associated works.
Where major irregularities are present in the supporting surface, use an appropriate grouting mortar to create a suitable level bearing surface.
Important Design Note
CANZAC Low Friction Bearing Strip provides a sliding interface between the precast floor unit and its supporting structure. It is not an elastomeric bearing pad and should not be used as a substitute where the structural design requires a compressible or load-rated bearing system.
The structural engineer and precast floor-system supplier must determine the required bearing length, strip width, support condition and movement allowance for each application.
